It was already an important center of trade when the city of Rome was born or when Buddha gave his first sermon in around 500 BC. Mark Twain, the famous novelist said, "Benaras is older than history, older than tradition, older even than legend." This city of temples has attracted pilgrims allover the world for more than 2,500 years. Benarasi mithais (sweets) and the famous Benarasi paan (betel leaf) are the two specialties of the city. Enjoy rickshaw rides along the narrow Varanasi lanes. The city is famous for its ghats along the bank of River Ganges. A ghat is a series of well-paved steps that lead to the water. From dawn to dusk, thousands of pilgrims bathe and offer prayers to the Sun- God in waist-deep water. It is believed that by doing the sacred River Ganges washes away the sins of their life. Assi, Dasawamedha, Barnasangam, Panchganga, and Manikarnika are the five main ghats of the city. Tour the enchanting Ghats on the banks of the holy River Ganges and tour the ancient temples.
